Re: To work or not to work: or what is "work" anyway?

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who has posted here. I'm really struggling with this now and don't have many words to say.

Work is my reason for living but day by day there are more reasons why I can't do what I'm expected to. It's encouraging to know people have been able to work out more flexible or personally-adapted patterns.

DEar @Former-Member

It's good to see you.

Not long ago...I had a different life.

But it's gone. I went to Centrelink today, at a Community Centre, these Centrelink people spend their time with people who spend times with mental ill health and other unmet needs, homeless and others....who spend times in the grass ground in my area.

I explained to them how much I wanted to work and they just said. Dont worry. Your doing enough. 3 hours per fortnight is enough for you. Just wait until the middle of the year and see how you are.

What gets me through is reading messages like yours and I dont feel as incompetant.I can barely get through the 3 hours per fortnight.

Re: To work or not to work: or what is "work" anyway?

How many carer hours do you put in with Little Buddha @PeppiPatty

Re: To work or not to work: or what is "work" anyway?

it's terrible @Appleblossom

!/2 hour per day.

BUT I canlt go anywhere without him........

Re: To work or not to work: or what is "work" anyway?

So you are clear about what you contribute to his well-being and what is simply together time

... that is great.

However not everything can be boiled down into hours per week.

Which bit is terrible @PeppiPatty

Sometimes I just love work .. other times I have to drag myself ... that seems to apply to many things in my life.

Re: To work or not to work: or what is "work" anyway?

V cool thread @Appleblossom, and @Mazarita.

my very full days are my work. My efforts are poorly remunerated, but that is not unusual in caring professions. I am a volunteer, a full time Carer, a mum, a mentor, a chauffeur, an advisor, an employer, an advocate, a counsellor, a dog groomer, a writer, medical advisor, DJ, an organic vegetable farmer and free range egg 'producer' an editor, a yogi, an adjudicator, a complex case manager, a snake handler, a caterer, and occasionally a hairdresser. I'm operating, "under contract" through a collection of Centrelink payments, and self managing and administering 4 very large NDIS packages. It's certainly a more varied role than is usual in a single workplace.

i don't have time (or energy) to take on paid employment!

Re: To work or not to work: or what is "work" anyway?

Love it @GothMum

I was looking up the NDIS I read on another thread.

I am feeling a little vindicated at the moment as my son has had a few wins and a few opportunities floating in the breeze.

As mums we just keep on .. you sound like you are doing many amazing jobs ...

wishing the best for you and your kids.

Re: To work or not to work: or what is "work" anyway?

@GothMum, your range of activities are impressive and inspiring. You are a dj? Awesome. I was very involved in electronic music for some years. These days I put together home made videos. I wonder whether you have always been this actively engaged or if this is the (very productive) result of breaking down out of your academic career in the past. Sometimes the worst things that happen to us give rise to other things that are possibly even more worthwhile. I've had a huge number of breakdowns out of regular work and couldn't complete tertiary studies because of mental health problems, but artistic engagement has been very consistent through everything. At one time I did casual teaching in unis, tafes and community centres based on some artistic success I had with media making earlier on. At present I'm slowly building myself back up again from a very long period of social withdrawal. It feels great to be able to step out into the world again. Welcome to the forum!
